Fun fact for non-Americans: we basically don’t use WhatsApp here unless our jobs require it (and it’s very cop-coded or cop-adjacent… like the only people I have heard of who’ve used it for work are employed in security or law enforcement), or talking to family abroad.

This surprises people for some reason.

@Elizafox me telling irl people in europe (austria mostly) that i dont have fb messenger or whatsapp and that they need to sms me usually elicits the same response.

they can have my telegram or signal over my cold dead hands. (that's where i be a weird furry on the internet)

@Jenetrix yeah here in the US there’s almost no real use so zero incentive to actually install it

And for many it’s like “why would I add this extra app owned by Meta that doesn’t let me talk to anyone I know”

Even people I know who use it for work don’t use it for anything but work and actively hate it

The default in the US is… well, SMS and iMessage tbh.

@Jenetrix Europeans I’ve noticed find it shocking that we kinda don’t consider our phone numbers that private (amongst friends at least)… it’s just the default way we communicate. We text. US culture is “don’t call without consent” unless you’re an ancient boomer so it’s not a big issue.
